Materials & Care

This page explains the materials used in Quirvow bags and how to look after them so they stay in good condition .

Materials we use

Quirvow bags are made from genuine leather. Depending on the design, we may use one or more of the following:

Goat leather
Lightweight, fine‑grained, and flexible. Goat leather is durable for its weight and develops a natural sheen as you use it.

Lamb leather
Soft, supple, and smooth to the touch. It is often used for smaller pieces or more refined designs where a softer feel is important.

Cow leather
Dense and durable. Cow leather holds its shape well and works best for more structured bags that need to keep a clear form.

Buffalo leather
Thicker and more textured than standard cowhide. Buffalo leather is very resilient and develops a strong, distinctive character over time.

All leathers used by Quirvow are sourced as a by‑product of the food industry. For each product, the specific leather type is listed in the product description so you know exactly what you are getting.

What to expect from handcrafted leather

Because Quirvow bags are made by hand from natural materials, you can expect:

  • Variations in grain pattern and surface texture, because no two hides are identical

  • Slight differences in colour tone, especially when natural dyes and traditional tanning methods are used

  • Minor differences in stitching, which are a normal part of hand‑work

These things are not defects. They are natural characteristics of genuine, artisanal leather goods and part of what makes each bag unique.

Leather care instructions

Daily use

  • Avoid leaving your bag in direct sunlight for long periods, as this can cause the leather to fade and dry out.

  • Try to keep the bag away from water. If it does get wet, let it dry naturally at room temperature. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, or any direct heat source.

  • Avoid contact with oils, cosmetics, perfumes, and alcohol‑based products, which can stain or mark the leather.

Cleaning

  • For light dust or surface dirt, gently wipe the leather with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth.

  • Do not use household cleaning sprays, wet wipes, or chemical solvents, as they can damage the leather.

  • For more stubborn marks, use a leather‑specific cleaner and apply it with a soft cloth in small circular motions, following the product instructions.

Leather Care Steps

Phase 1: Conditioning

  1. Apply conditioner: Put a conditioner on the leather every 3–6 months, or more often if the leather starts to look dry. Use a conditioner that is suitable for the type of leather you have; always check the label.

  2. Test the product: Test any product first on an area to check for change before you apply it to the bag.

Phase 2: Storage

  1. Choose a location: Store your bag in a place away from sunlight and humidity.

  2. Use the right cover: For storage, keep it in a dust bag made of cotton or canvas. Avoid bags, which trap moisture.

  3. Maintain the shape: Stuff the bag with paper or material to help it keep its shape while stored.

Phase 3: Hardware Care

  1. Wipe the metal: Wipe hardware such as zippers, buckles, and rings periodically with a cloth to remove dust and fingerprints.

  2. Avoid moisture: Avoid moisture, which can cause tarnishing over time.

  3. Avoid cleaners: Do not use cleaners or polish on hardware, as this may scratch or remove the finish.
