Materials & Care
This page explains the materials used in Quirvow bags and how to care for them so your bag stays in good condition for years.
Materials We Use
Quirvow bags are made from genuine leather. Depending on the design, we use one or more of the following:
Goat Leather
Lightweight, fine-grained, and flexible. Goat leather is durable for its weight and develops a natural sheen with use.
Lamb Leather
Soft, supple, and smooth to the touch. Often used for smaller or more refined bag designs.
Cow Leather
Dense and durable. Cow leather holds its shape well and is well-suited to structured bag designs.
Buffalo Leather
Thicker and more textured than standard cow hide, buffalo leather is highly resilient and develops a distinctive character over time.
All leathers used by Quirvow are sourced as a byproduct of the food industry. Specific materials are listed in each product description.
What to Expect from Handcrafted Leather
Because Quirvow bags are made by hand from natural materials, you should expect:
-
>Variations in grain pattern and surface texture — no two hides are identical.
>Slight variations in color tone — natural dyes and tanning methods produce subtle differences.
>Minor differences in stitching pattern — hand-stitching has a character that machine-stitching does not.
These are not defects. They are characteristics of genuine artisanal leather goods and are part of what makes each bag unique.
Leather Care Instructions
Daily Use
-
>Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause leather to fade and dry out.
>
Keep leather away from water where possible — if it gets wet, allow it to dry naturally at room temperature.
Do not use a heat source to dry it.
>Avoid contact with oils, cosmetics, and alcohol-based products, which can stain leather.
Cleaning
-
>For surface dust and dirt, wipe gently with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth.
>Do not use household cleaning sprays, wet wipes, or chemical solvents on leather.
>
For more stubborn marks, use a leather-specific cleaner applied with a soft cloth in small circular motions.
Conditioning
-
>Apply a leather conditioner every 3–6 months, or more frequently if the leather appears dry.
>Use a conditioner appropriate for the type of leather — check the product label.
>
Apply a small amount first to a hidden area to test for color change before applying to the full bag.
Storage
-
>Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity.
>
If storing long-term, place the bag in a breathable dust bag (cotton or canvas). Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture.
>Stuff the bag lightly with tissue paper to help it retain its shape.
Hardware Care
Metal hardware (zippers, buckles, rings) should be wiped down periodically with a dry cloth. Avoid exposure to moisture, which can cause tarnishing. Do not use abrasive polish on coated hardware.
